GETTING THERE

VISAS FOR INDIANS
Citizens of India need to have a valid visa for Austria. The visa application takes nearly 15 working days to be processed. One can apply for a Schengen visa through VFS Global.
WEATHER-WISE
Located within a temperate climatic zone, Austria experiences a dynamic climatic range with hot summers reaching 30° C and chilly winters with an average of 5° C lower for each additional 300 m of elevation.
The driest months for the country are May, September and the first half of October while April and November are the wettest periods.

Legal Requirements & Documentation
However, it is note-worthy here that a civil ceremony performed by an official of the Standesamt (German civil registration office) is the only legally binding type of wedding ceremony possible in Austria. The following must be kept in mind while planning a destination wedding in Austria:
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED:
1. Birth Certificate (or certified copy),
2. Court Divorce Decree Absolute or Death Certificate (if appropriate),
3. Certificate of no Impediment to Marriage (not older than 6 months),
4. Proof of residence,
5. Valid Passport, and
6. Photocopies of the picture page of passports of the couple & two witnesses.
IMPORTANT NOTES:
1. The marriage application can be filed up to a maximum of six months prior to the wedding date following which there may be a waiting period of 2 to 6 weeks before a confirmed date of wedding is given,
2. The marriage application must be filed at the Standesamt of residence in case either of the to-be-wed is an Austrian or resides in Austria, or at the main registrar’s office in Vienna in case the couple is neither Austrian neither resides in Austria,
3. All documents must be original or certified copies and translated into Austrian German by relevant authorities, and
4. All documents must be submitted at least 8 to 10 weeks prior to the wedding.

One of the most offbeat traditions of Austrian weddings is the neighbours waking up the bride-to-be very early on her wedding day with gunshots and firecrackers to drive away the evil spirits with the noise.
Another popular custom is the groom fetching his would-be-wife from her parents’ home and then driving towards the registrar’s office via a route blocked by friends and neighbours requiring the love birds to complete certain tasks.
However, the most popular tradition is the auction of the bridal shoe with the guests bidding on it in order to help raise money for the newly-weds.
