Italy is a country where creativity and passion unite. It’s a country where love surmounted war when Mark Antony pledged himself to Cleopatra and in the present day Virat Kohli & Anushka Sharma took their wedding vows. It’s a country where Michelangelo breathed life into Pieta!

Home to world’s finest architecture, art and gastronomy, Italy is one of the most popular places in the world to have a destination wedding. A wedding in Italy is not planned, it is designed! Be prepared to let passion overtake you in the spectacular city of Rome or unite your souls on the glittering city of Venice. Make promises of love in romantic Tuscany or watch the mountains plunge into sea as you commit to each other at the Amalfi coast; your options for a destination wedding in Italy are numerous.

Alpine mountains, gentle valleys, rugged cliff tops, icy glaciers, verdant forests and calm lakes showcase nature’s diversity that Italy is blessed with. The simple yet soul stirring culinary delights will take you for an ambrosial food odyssey that you have never experienced. Style permeates everything in Italy whether it’s an intricately designed dress or a well finished expresso. A destination wedding in Italy is a dream that many see and you shall live!

Getting Married in Italy
Legal Requirements & Documentation

Getting married in Italy for Indians is not very difficult and the following documents are required.

1. Nulla Osta,

2. Court Divorce Decree Absolute or Death Certificate (if appropriate),

3. A certificate of non-impediment (also known as CNI) or, depending on citizenship an Atto Notorio,

4. Valid Passport, and

5. Proof of Regular Entry into Italy for non-Europeans citizens

The Indian Embassy in Italy does not issue the Nulla Osta which is the main paperwork requested by the Italian authorities for a civil/legally binding wedding. You could get in touch with your wedding planner who will help you apply for one.

Italian Weddings
Customs & Traditions

Sunday weddings are the luckiest and if a bride wears green the night before the wedding, it will bring luck and abundance to the couple. Conversely, if she wears gold on the day of the wedding or before it, she will receive bad luck.

On the way to the church, the bride and groom will receive several challenges involving a fallen broom, a crying baby, or other household chores to test their skills before marriage. In Northern Italy, the groom brings the bride’s bouquet and he chooses the color and style of the flowers as his gift to her.

To ward off the evil-eye from envious people, a groom should carry a piece of iron (toc ferro). At the reception, all the men at the reception are supposed to kiss the bride for good luck and to make the groom jealous.

During the reception, the bride carries a satin pouch where guests can place envelopes of money for the chance to dance with her. Of course, no reception would be complete without dancing the traditional tarantella, which is the dance of the spider and involves light and quick movements with passionate hand gestures.

The food is almost as important as the ceremony and guests may be served up to 14 different courses and of course the cake is served with espresso.

Wedding Locations in Italy

Romance and renaissance rule Rome. The spectacular Roman Catholic churches are a perfect place to celebrate your wedding. So beautiful is this city that every corner serves as a breathtaking backdrop for your wedding functions.

A unique amalgamation of history and romance, Rome is also a very convenient place to have a destination wedding. Your guests will love wandering through Rome’s fascinating streets. The Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, picture perfect churches and dining experiences at Michelin star restaurants will give them memories to cherish for a lifetime.

The modern architecture together with renaissance monuments makes Rome a desirable wedding destination.

Imagine you and your loved one taking a gondola ride on the glittering Grand Canal to reach your wedding venue. Venice is the stuff dreams are made of. It spoils you for choice when it comes to hosting wedding functions.

Choose to get married in the private renaissance palaces with their ornate interiors, say ‘I do’ in the sumptuous hotels or seal the deal in the expressive gardens and expansive grounds of an old island monastery.

Either ways you will make memories for a lifetime. Your guests can enjoy the local food specialties like the seafood and risottos which Venice is famous for.

Rome is another great place to organize a bachelorette party. There are many bars, clubs, discotheques that focus on music, food and wine and promise an unforgettable experience.

Venice is a great place to organize a bachelor party. The lounges & music houses with their jazz music offer a perfect atmosphere where one can party till the wee hours of the morning. Great cocktails with heady music and food will get you into the groove.

For an open air beachside party experience, Sicily is the place to be. Don’t miss the sushi buffet and an all-night experience in the bars of Sicily which will leave you asking for more.

One can organize the Sangeet ceremony in Florence, Siena or Chianti in Tuscany. Whether it is the medieval villas in Florence or the majestic castles of Siena and Chianti these locales with their countryside ambience will leave your guests asking for more. Weave in a few steps of Tarantella, one of the top dances of Italy along with some jazz music and your sangeet ceremony will have an Indian – Italian touch.

When it comes to outdoor tours & excursions Italy has a lot to offer. One can treat their guests to the famous Venice walking tour & a Gondola ride or they can experience a more authentic Venice by visiting the islands of Murano, Burano and Torcello.

The mehendi ceremony can be organized in one of the beautiful Tuscan villas with the warm Tuscan sunlight illuminating the mehendi function. Tuscany is an artistic powerhouse and the beautiful villas will add a unique Italian touch to the mehendi ceremony.

A cruise on the Mediterranean Amalfi coast would be a wonderful activity for the couple and the guests. The coastline offers picturesque views as one sails through the crystal clear waters and experiences a gentle breeze that is totally uplifting. One can also choose from beach tours, boat tours, scuba & snorkeling tours, kayaking tours, and nature & wildlife tours to entertain friends and family.

Sightseeing in Italy

Sightseeing in Rome can be pleasantly overwhelming. One must visit the St. Peter’s Basilica and St. Peters Square in Vatican City along with the famous Sistine’s chapel. The Colosseum in Rome is one of Italy’s most thrilling historical structures, hence not to be missed. Go and witness a structure which hosted killing sprees between animals and gladiators and watch history come alive in front of you.

Toss a coin in the famous Trevi Fountain as you gasp with glory at the very many mythical figures that adorn it. Come back in the evening and watch its marvelous structure all lit up as you soak in the beauty of this fountain.

Indulge in a little crowd watching as you sip coffee on the Spanish Steps or at Piazza Navona.

Tuscany, with its breathtaking landscapes, artistic churches, countryside sculpture parks and edgy street art, weaves in a beautiful Italian experience.

One can visit Il Duomo di Firenze in Florence, the third largest church in the world and witness an artistic portrayal of gothic art.

One can also visit the precarious Leaning tower of Pisa, which, with its beautiful arches and intricately designed columns is the loveliest tower in Italy.

Siena’s Piazza Del Campo, Chianti’s lyrical landscapes, beautiful villas and stone castles give you every bit of an Italian experience that you will cherish for a lifetime to come.
