airplanes at an airport

Being a popular tourist destination, Thailand is well connected to India with many carriers offering direct flights from most Indian metros to Bangkok – Suvarnabhumi International Airport. A non-stop flight takes roughly 4-5 hours.

Indians are granted a 30 day tourist visa on arrival by paying THB 1000 at the entry airport. This fee is payable only in Thai currency.

For the entry visa, you must have a dated return ticket, your passport must be valid for 6 months; you must have a valid address of stay in Thailand, you must have at least 10,000 Thai Baht per person or 20,000 Thai Baht per family to spend on your trip.

sunny beach weather wedding

The high-season for tourists is from November to March when the weather is cool and dry. This is a good time to plan your destination wedding as the landscapes will be lush and green!

The average night to day temperature ranges between 17 – 30 degrees.

Getting Married in Thailand
Legal requirements & Documentation

You and your partner will need to appear in person, with your respective passports and arrival card, at the Indian Embassy in Bangkok to procure the 'Affirmation of Freedom to Marry in Thailand' Certificate.

You will need to take the Affirmation of Freedom certificate to a trusted translation office to have it translated into Thai.

You will need to go to the Thai Consular Affairs to submit your affirmation plus translation and photocopy of your passport. You will be given a time when you have to go back to collect your authenticated documents. The wait period could range from 1 to 4 hours.

Once you get these documents back you have completed the process. Keep everything safely together. You will have to present these documents to the Government office of your choice when you go to register your marriage after the ceremony. Of course, you can register your marriage before the ceremony too.

Please allow 4 working days in Bangkok prior to registering your marriage as you are required to be in Thailand for at least three days before you marry and you must allow time for the paperwork to be processed in Bangkok. This also allows you to visit some of the wonderful attractions in Thailand.

Thai Wedding Ceremony
Customs & Traditions

In Thai tradition, before any important event like a marriage, a Buddhist will “make merit” to call good things into one’s life. Amongst the numerous ways to “make merit,” is the procedure to release a captive animal or donating money to a temple.

As part of the actual wedding ceremony, the bride and groom are seated next to each other and are joined by a sacred thread blessed by a monk. The couple hold their hands close together as their most honoured guests use a special shell, usually taken from the sea, to pour water over the uniting pair as they wish the couple well.

Wedding Locations in Thailand

Whether it’s a ceremony with Thai dancers escorting you to the altar, or baby elephants as your guests, Phuket really can deliver it all. There are many good reasons to choose Phuket for your special day like value for money for high-end facilities, variety of ceremonies i.e Thai traditional, beach wedding & religious ceremony and of course your relatives can enjoy a holiday and attend your wedding! Laguna Complex, right next to a beautiful lake and surrounded by tropical greenery makes for a fabulous venue.

Made up of many small islands with crystal clear waters and limestone formations, Krabi is a paradise for couples planning a beach wedding. Have the entire Andaman Sea as your backdrop at a private beach venue. Say the weddings vows with the cool sea breeze and open blue skies as your witness. Koh Lanta is a striking island district in Krabi to pick as your venue.

Idyllic half-moon stretches of shell-strewn beaches shaded by skinny coconut trees, gentle music igniting the romance in the air while your guests relax in the tropical atmosphere. Koh Samui is one of the most eye-catching venues one can hope for in Thailand. Koh Samui has many private five star resorts as well as public venues to opt from. Anantara Bophut is a prime spot on Bophut beach and if you don’t care so much for privacy, then the vibrancy of this place is contagious.

If you dream of a traditional, fairy-tale wedding, then look no further than Chiang Mai. Unlike the many beach destinations, Chiang Mai offers a more conventional village setting with rice fields, chain of gorgeous mountains while being blessed by the elders of that village. Most weddings in Chiang Mai are performed under the traditional Lanna style.
