Sri Lankan Wedding
Customs & Traditions

The bride is dressed in an exquisite ivory Osariya, adorned with the traditional Kandyan jewellery, and groom in Arya Sinhala attire. At a predetermined Nekath (auspicious time) the couple steps on to the Poruwa (a decorated platform), thus signifying the beginning of the sacred ceremony of a Sri Lankan Buddhist wedding.
The little fingers of the couple are tied together with Pirith Nool or gold thread by a maternal uncle of the bride who then pours Pirith Pan (holy water) over their tied fingers. This ritual is significant because water and earth are two sacred elements in Buddhism and are considered to be eternal truths.

Beach Weddings in Sri Lanka

Negombo beach is one of the most popular locations to tie the knot in Sri Lanka. Set amidst idyllic shores, this is the perfect place to have an enchanting beach wedding complete with a magical ambience created with fireworks, live music, and brilliant decor.

The sand beneath your feet, your hands in the hands of your loved one as the beautiful sunset graces the occasion with beautiful hues. Is there a better way to get married than a barefoot wedding on the beach at sunset? At Barefoot beach you can choose a dedicated area for your wedding. Whether a religious ceremony or a traditional Sri Lankan wedding, experience drummers, dancers, an elephant and the abundance of nature.

Located on a beautiful peninsula, Kalutara Beach is an ideal location for a posh beach wedding. Surrounded by vibrant gardens and a private beach fringed with palm trees, contemporary architecture & top-notch cuisine, it is easily one of the most sought after destination wedding venues in Sri Lanka.

Although not a beach, it is still a beautiful city set atop a plateau overlooking the blue seas. Exchange vows outdoors in beautifully landscaped gardens, with the river and mountain range as your witnesses. Sri Lankan traditional drummers, decorative oil lamps around the venue, traditionally dressed ushers and a romantic boat ride for the couple will give your special day a distinctive touch!
