    Getting Married in Malaysia
    Legal Requirements & Documentation

The simplest way to get legally married in Malaysia is at the office of the Registrar of Marriages (ROM). Although, if you'd like to get married in a church or a temple, remember that for the marriage to be legally recognised, you have to register it as a civil marriage with ROM first.

Before you can get married, you have to be staying in the same district that you intend to be married in for a minimum of 7 days. Both, the bride & groom, have to fill and sign a form JPN.KC02 (Application Form, Notice of Marriage and Written Declaration) in the presence of the ROM. Here is a list of supporting documents you need to attach to the form:

    1. Original and one (1) photocopy of each Passport page with personal details, latest arrival date in Malaysia and a valid visa,
    2. Original and one (1) photocopy of Birth Certificate,
    3. Original letter confirming marital status: Single Status Certificate from the applicant's country of origin or Certificate of No Impediment (CNI) completed in Malaysia,
    4. If applicant has been divorced: Original and one (1) photocopy of Decree Nisi Absolute,
    5. If applicant is a widow or widower: Original and one (1) photocopy of Death Certificate of former spouse,

Upon receipt of your application and supporting documents and fee, the Registrar of Marriages (ROM) will publish the Notice of Marriage by posting it on a notice board of the Registry for twenty-one (21) days for normal marriage. The Registrar of Marriages (ROM) will issue a Certificate for Marriage after the expiration date of publication of the Notice of Marriage.

You must then arrange for your marriage to be solemnised by the Registrar of Marriage. Both parties must be suitably attired. Shorts, skirts above the knees, sleeveless tops, T-shirts, jeans, skin-tight pants or leggings, flip-flops and slippers are not allowed. Your marriage needs to be solemnised in the presence of at least two credible witness besides the Registrar. Your witnesses, who may be friends or relatives, must be citizens of Malaysia, at least 21 years of age and could understand the declarations made during the ceremony.

Immediately after the solemnisation is performed, the Registrar will enter the prescribed particulars in the marriage register, which will be attested by the bride & groom and by the two witnesses. Please note that it is VERY IMPORTANT to check the entry in the marriage register to ensure the details are correct. It can be a complex process to make any correction in the marriage register after signing it. After the marriage has been registered, a Marriage Certificate will be issued by the Registrar.

    Malay Wedding
    Customs & Traditions

    FLOWER BATH
The bride is given a bath with scented oils, lime water and water mixed with petals from 7 types of flowers such as ‘Sundal Malam’, ‘Mawar’, ‘Cempaka’, ‘Kenanga’, ‘Tanjung’, ‘Melur’ and ‘Kesidang’. This ritual is supposed to disperse bad luck and ward off bad spirits.
The bride’s family sends a bouquet made from betel nut leaves shaped into a cone. This is an indication to the groom that the entourage may proceed to their house. The groom then arrives to the bride’s holding the same betel nut leaves bouquet.
