GETTING THERE

VISAS FOR INDIANS
Citizens of India need to have a valid visa for Croatia. The visa application takes nearly 15 working days to be processed. One can apply for a Schengen visa through VFS Global.
WEATHER-WISE
The coast has a typically Mediterranean climate consisting of hot, dry, sunny weather during summer, and relatively mild – though sometimes wet – weather in winter.
Average temperatures during summer should lie in the mid-to-high 20s °C. Winters are obviously cooler, although temperatures never really get below about 5° C / 41° F.

Getting Married in Croatia
Legal Requirements & Documentation
DOCUMENTS REQUIRED:
1. Certificate of no impediment/ certificate of Freedom to marry bearing the stamp apostille,
2. Full passport with minimum validity of twelve months,
3. Photocopies of the picture page of the passports of the bride and groom,
4. Photocopies of the picture page of the passports for your two witnesses, listing their name, address and occupation,
5. Full birth certificate (showing mother and fathers names), bearing the stamp apostille,
6. If you are divorced – Decree Absolute and previous marriage certificate,
7. If you are a widower – Death certificate of previous spouse and previous marriage certificate,
8. Name change deed poll certificate – if applicable, and
9. Adoption certificate if applicable.

OBILJEZJE
Before a small box with an expensive ring came into fashion, young Croatian men proposed marriage with a piece of fruit referred to as obiljezje (the mark). Basically, it’s an ordinary apple with coins stuck into it. If the girl accepted it, the obiljezje would mark her with the man who proposed, thus making them engaged.
BARJAKTAR
The Barjaktar is the “banner holder,” the person who has the honor of waving the Croatian flag in front of the wedding procession as they make their way to town hall or church.
The tradition of the barjaktar is usually bestowed upon the individual considered as being the most funny, crazy and loud!
ROSEMARY BUTTONHOLE
As guests enter the reception, they are greeted with a stem of rosemary wrapped in ribbon (usually red white and blue) which is pinned like a buttonhole to their left side as a sign of welcome.
In Croatia, guests normally leave a donation for their rosemary buttonholes for good luck.
FAMILY PANTS
A custom used to determine who will become the real leader of the house or “wear the pants” when the newlywed couple start living together is basically down to the skill or art of stepping on each other’s feet!
After the actual wedding, the married couple would try to step on each other’s feet and if the groom succeeded to do so before the bride, he would be the head of the house. On the other hand, if the bride managed to step on the groom’s foot, she would become the boss.
Another version of this would see the newlyweds racing to the church doors and the winner would run the house. Hardly fair with a bride in heels and a big dress!
CROATIAN SCHNAPPS
At Croatian weddings, it is up to a master of ceremonies to welcome and entertain wedding guests. Part of this involves offering guests a shot of home-made schnapps. The bottle of schnapps is wrapped in a towel, handmade specifically for the wedding from woven cotton and after the celebrations are over, the master of ceremonies would keep the towel as a very special gift from the bride and groom.
BRIDAL DANCE
At midnight, a fun tradition known as “Dance with the Bride” typically commences at Croatian weddings. Usually the maid of honor holds a basket into which every guest must make a monetized contribution. The larger the contribution, the longer the dance with the bride!
