Mexican Weddings
Customs & Traditions
THE THIRTEEN GOLD COINS
Thirteen gold coins (arras) are given to the bride by the bridegroom, signifying his willingness to support her. Often presented in ornate boxes or gift trays, this represents the brides dowry and holds good wishes for prosperity. These coins become a part of their family heirloom.
HONORING BOTH PARENTS
In Mexican wedding ceremonies both the bride and groom walk towards the altar accompanied by both parents. It serves to honor both parents and is also a symbol of the parents consenting to the union of their children.
LOS PADRINOS
Los Padrinos translates as godparents and are sponsors for different aspects of the wedding such as the flowers, the ceremony, the cake, and even the bride’s dress. These Padrinos contribute to the cost of the wedding ceremony.
MONEY DANCE
In this tradition male guests "pay" to dance with the bride, and female guests "pay" to dance with the groom. In reality it is just an excuse to gift money, the preferred gift by all, to bride and groom.
